Chemistry Laws Chapter 2 Flashcards
Law of Definite Proportions
All samples of pure compound contain the same elements in the same proportion by mass.
Law of Multiple Proportions
The masses of one element which combine with a fixed mass of the second element are in a ratio of WHOLE NUMBERS. Compounds have whole number ratios to each other.
Laws of Definite and Multiple Proportions #1
If two samples have the same elements in the same mass ratios, they are likely the same type of compound.
Laws of Definite and Multiple Proportions #2
If two samples have the same elements in different mass ratios, they are different compounds.
Laws of Definite and Multiple Proportions #3
The masses are related to relative amounts of each type of atom in a compound.
