Chemistry Keywords C3.2 C3.3 Flashcards
Redox
a chemical reaction in which one substance is reduced while another is oxidised
Reduced
describes a substance that has lost oxygen, or gained electrons, in a chemical reaction
Reducing agent
substance that reduces another substance by accepting oxygen or by donating electrons
Reduction
a loss of oxygen, or gain of electrons, by a substance in a chemical reaction
Strong acid
an acid that is fully ionised in aqueous solution
Weak acid
acid only partially ionised in aqueous solution
Acid
substance that ionises in water, releasing hydrogen ions
Alkali
a soluble base
Base
a substance that neutralises acids forming a salt and water only
Carbonates
ionic compounds that contain the carbonate ion
Dilute
a solution with a relatively low amount of solute
Neutralisation
a reaction between an acid and a base or alkali, producing a salt plus water
Oxidation
a gain of oxygen, or loss of electrons, by a substance in a chemical reaction
Oxidised
describes a substance that has gained oxygen, or lost electrons, in a chemical reaction
Oxidising agent
a substance that oxidises another substance by donating oxygen or by accepting electrons
Ph
the relative acidity or alkalinity of an aqueous solution
Ph scale
a scale that measures relative acidity or alkalinity of an aqueous solution, from 0 (strongly acidic) through 7 (neutral), to 14 (strongly alkaline)
Bond energy
the amount of energy that must be transferred to break a mole of a particular covalent bond
Energy change
the difference between the energy transferred from the surroundings to break bonds in the reactants, and the energy transferred from products when bonds form
Product
the substance(s) formed in a chemical reaction
Reaction profile
chart that shows the energy of the reactants and products in a chemical reaction
