Chemistry Keywords Flashcards
What is Atomic absorbtion spectroscopy used for ?
Detecting concentration of a particular metal in solution.
What is infrared spectrometry used for ?
Find the different bonds , e.g C=C in ethane or O-H in ethanol.
what is Ultraviolet spectroscopy used for ?
Find the concentration of the substance by finding how much light is absorbed.
what is Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy used for
Tell us how the atoms are arranged in a molecule , so tells us the structure. So we can tell the differance between ethanol and ethanal.
what is Chromatography used for ?
Gas - liquid seperate compunds that are easily vapourised (e.g distilled water, ethyl alcohol, essential lavender oil, essential bergamot oil.
gel permeaton, seperating according to the molecule size ( e.g methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, etc) Ion-exchange seperate compounds containing different charged particles (e.g Iron (ii) chloride and iron (iii) chloride)
High performance separate compounds in solution
what is Mass Spectroscopy used for ?
find the relative atomic mass of an atom.
Describe the flame test
The metal salt or other compound is mixed with concentrated hydrochloric acid and a sample of the mixture is heated strongly in a bunsen flame on the end of a cleaned nichrome wire
Describe the NaOH test
dilute sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution is added to a solution containing the suspected ion.
Describe the Litmus paper test
ammonia: damp red litmus
ammonium ion. smelly ammonia released and red litmus turns blue.
Describe the Action of acid
add acid to carbonate and buuble gas through limewater.
Describe the Decomposition reaction
Heat carbonate and bubble gas through limewater.
Describe the silver nitrate test
add dilute nitric acid and silver nitrate solution. The silver nitrate is acidified with dilute nitrate acid to prevent the precipiation of other non - halide silver salts.
Describe BaCl2 / HCi
A white precipate of barium sulfate
Describe Al powder / NaOH
Add COLD sodium hydroxide solution and Al powder to the suspected ammonium salt and test any gas above the solution with red litmus.
smelly ammonia released ! and litmus turns blue .
YOU GO GIRL ;)
Describe Saturation unsaturation
Bubble gas through, or add liquid to a solution of bromine water. The orange/brown bromine rapidly decolourises, as a saturated colourless organic bromocompound is formed.
Describe Indicator
Methyl Orange Strong acid and weak base Phenolphthalein Weak acid and strong base and indicator Strong acid and strong base
