Chemistry In Our Lives Flashcards
Chemist
A chemist is a person who actually manufactures medicine in the laboratory.
Pharmacist
Take a doctor’s prescription. He/she also dispenses the medicine.
Pharmacy
A pharmacy is the building a pharmacist works in.
Rubber
Rubber is a naturally occurring plastic.
Natural materials
Wool, water, crude oil, cotton and fur.
Synthetic materials
Artificial or man-made.
Examples of synthetic:
Nylon (tights), polyester (shirt), polythene (plastic bags), glass, terylene (crease free clothes), acrylic (yarn) and melamine (plastic plates).
Plastics are made from
Crude oil.
Fossil fuels
Are formed from the remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago.
Hydrocarbons
All fossil fuels are made mainly of the elements hydrogen and carbon and so are called hydrocarbons.
Methane
Natural gas is mainly methane (CH4).
Fossil fuels produce
Carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) when burned.
The gas sulphur dioxide (SO2) is released
On fossil fuels (coal and oil) which contain sulphur compounds.
Acid rain
Sulphur dioxide combines with rainwater to form sulphuric acid, causing acid rain.
Acid rain harm:
Kills fish, is harmful to plants and erodes limestone buildings.
