Chemistry - Helpful things to know Flashcards
Ionic bonds will form when…
a metal and non-metal combine
Metals from groups _, _, and _ will form _____ with set charges.
Non-metals from groups _, _, and _ will form _____ with set charges.
Metals from groups 1, 2, and 3 will form cations.
Non-metals from 5, 6, and 7 will form anions.
What are cations?
Cations are a type of ionic bond. They are atoms that have lost electron/s and are positively charged ions. E.g. sodium and chlorine leads to sodium losing an electron and is then positively charged.
What are anions?
Anions are a type of ionic bond. They are atoms that have gained electron/s and are negatively charged ions. E.g. sodium and chlorine leads to chlorine gaining an electron.
What is a covalent bond?
A bond formed between non-metal atoms. The atoms will be connect by a shared pair of valence electrons because non-metals want to gain atoms to reach a stable arrangement.
What is a molecule?
A molecule is a neutral particle of two or more atoms bonded to each other.
