Chemistry Gcse :seperating Solutions (distillation) Flashcards
What is simple distillation🫧?
Separating a LIQUID from a solution
What is fractional distillation 🫧?
Separating MIXTURES of liquid ( separating multiple liquids from one another )
Steps for simple distillation! ( first step is …)
To prepare your equipment
What equipment do you need to do this experiment (simple distillation)?
🫧thermometer
🫧distillation flask
🫧 condenser
🫧multiple corks
🫧receiving flask (used to collect pure substance ) at the end
🫧Bunsen burner
🫧water jacket to cover the condenser
Step 2 (simple distillation)
Cool the condenser
Step 3 ( simple distillation)
Use the Bunsen burner to heat the substance up that you want distilling ( purified)
Step 4 ( simple distillation)
Keep an eye on the thermometer to see when it reaches its boiling point ( bubbles start to come )
Step 5 ( simple distillation)
Vaporisation - let the boiling liquid travel through the cold condenser
Step 6 ( simple distillation)
As the vapour passes through it will cool and become a liquid once again seeing as the condenser is also cold
Collect the distillate 🫧 is which step in the process ?
Step 7 !
What is the distillate ?
The purified substance
Step 8 ( simple distillation)?
Continue to collect the distillate ( cooling vapour )
Step 9 ( simple distillation)?
Collect the final distillate ( purified substance ) in the receiver flask and then ANYTHING LEFT IN THE DISTILLING FLASK is unpurified
What is the only difference in equipment for fractional distillation compared to simple distillation?
MUST USE A FRACTIONATING COLUMN INSTEAD OF
What does a fractionating column have inside of it ?
Little glass rods that stop all the liquids your trying to separate ,from all distilling together
When doing fractional distillation what else is important?
To start by boiling the substance from lowest to highest boiling points !
If three different liquids had boiling points of ; 65degrees ,76degrees and 97degrees which boiling point would you want to reach first to distill the first liquid
65 degrees - seeing as it is the lowest
