Chemistry Final Vocab Flashcards
Chemical Property
The ability or inability of a substance to combine with or change into one or more new substances.
Chemical Change
A change of one or more substances into other substances.
Dissolving
A process in which substances mix uniformly with one another.
Physical Property
Any characteristic of a material that can be observed without changing the identity of the material itself.
Law of Conservation of Mass
The total mass before a chemical reaction is the same as the total mass after reaction.
Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy is neither created nor destroyed in chemical reactions.
Reactants
The starting materials in a chemical reaction.
Products
The new substances that result from a chemical reaction.
Diatomic Molecule
A particle consisting of two atoms.
Coefficient
A number placed in front of a symbol or a formula in a chemical equation.
Exothermic Process
A process that releases energy as heat.
Endothermic Process
A process that absorbs energy as heat.
Catalyst
A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction, or lowers the temperature or pressure needed to start one, without itself being consumed during the reaction.
