CHEMISTRY EXAM Flashcards
TO LEARN CHEMISTRY
Ionic bonding
When A element with a high valence electron transfers to another element, in order for both to achieve their octet.
Endothermic reaction
Endothermic reaction
- Greater energy is required to initiate a reaction, by breaking the bonds in the reactants, as opposed to the energy released in the formation of bonds within the products. This energy is often absorbed in the form of heat from the surrounding area.
Exothermic reaction
Exothermic reaction
- Greater energy released by the bonds in the products than the energy required to break the bonds in the reactants. This release in the products typically is exerted as heat into the surrounding area.
What is the structure of a Metallic bonding?
Metallic Bonding properties are
- Cation lattice structure
- delocalized electrons
In an acid and base reaction (Neutralization) What results in the product?
Salt and water
Definition of isotopes
reoccurring elements with different neutron counts. EG carbon 12 , carbon 13 and carbon14
How do you speed up a reaction
- increasing surface area of contact
- Using a catalyst
- increased temperature
- stirring or agitation (mechanical means)
- increased concentration
The difference between intramolecular and intermolecular
Intermolecular bonds, describe the bonds between molecules and compounds which is typically weaker, to intramolecular bonds that occur between elements.
How to identify bases and acids.
Bases are often bonded with hydroxide (-OH), and acids are often found bonded with hydrogen and oxygen. Eg (HCL) Hydrochloric acid
What is collision theory
Collision theory denotes that particles must collide with sufficient energy and particular orientation in order to react.
Name all types of reactions
-Single displacement Ab + c –> cb + A
-Double displacement Ab +Cd –> Cb + Ad
-Composition A+b –> Ab
-decomposition (ab –> a + b)
