Chemistry Equipment Flashcards
(23 cards)
Holds liquids that don’t release gasses, and are unlikely to splatter if stirred or heated. Cannot be stoppered, may be heated.
Approximate volume measurement.
Beaker.
Used to measure exact volumes of liquids, DO NOT HEAT
Graduated cylinder
Holds solids or liquids that might release gasses if stirred or heated, can be stoppered and heated.
Approximate volume measurements.
Erlenmeyer flask
Delivers streams of distilled water when squeezed.
Wash bottle
Used to perform many small scale reactions at once.
Microwell plate
Used to aid in the transfer of liquids into a smaller container,
Funnel
May be used to contain a reaction, can be stoppered or heated.
Test tubes
Used for holding or organizing test tubes
Test tube rack
Used for heating certain solids, particularly metals, to very high temperatures.
Crucible
Used to transfer a small amount of liquid
Pipette
Used to measure the mass of chemicals and glassware.
Electronic Balance
Used for the heating of volatile or non-volatile liquids, can also be used to provide hot water for a bath.
Hot plate
A safe way to hold equipment over heat
Ring Stand
The platform used to hold equipment over heat
Ring Clamp or Iron Ring
Used to hold burettes (tall, thin measuring tubes) on a ring stand.
Burette clamp
Sits on top of the iron ring to provide a platform for a beaker
Wire gauze
Used as a support for crucibles when being held over a Bunsen burner
Clay triangle
Used to heat only non-volatile liquids or solids
Bunsen burner
Used to light a Bunsen burner with a spark
Striker
Used for holding a heated test tube
Test tube holder
Used to scoop or dispense solids in small amounts
Scoopula
Used to handle heated crucibles
Crucible tongs
Used to hold a small amount of a solid for viewing, or test for the presence of vapors/steam.
