Chemistry~ Elements and Compounds Flashcards
What is an element?
An element only contains one type of atom and can be found on the periodic table.
What is a compound?
A compound is a substance containing at least two different elements that are
chemically bonded together.
What is a mixture?
A mixture contains at least two different
substances (elements and/or compounds)
that are not chemically bonded together.
What is an atom?
The simplest things in the universe found in elements.
Label the neutrons, protons and electrons of an atom (on canvas)
Answer on canvas.
What is matter?
The general scientific term, describing the ‘stuff’ that makes up everything around us.
What are molecules?
Made up of two or more atoms of the same element.
What are compounds?
Substance made up of two or more different atoms that are chemically joined together.
Protons have…?
Positive charge.
Electrons have…?
Negative charge.
Neutrons have…?
No charge.
The larger number of an element is the…?
The larger number is the atomic mass – this
tells us how many protons and neutrons are in
the nucleus.
The smaller number is the…?
Atomic number – this
tells us how many protons are in the nucleus (and
how many electrons are orbiting).
Use canva for examples of finding p|P~ E~N
On canva.
What is the formula for density?
Mass divided by volume.
M/V ~ g/cm 3
Fill the blanks: An irregularly shaped object was balanced to find it’s mass in ____.
A _________ can was filled to the spout with water, the object lowered into the can, displacing some of the water, which flowed through the_______ into a __________ .
Grams……. Eureka…….spout………beaker.
The number of protons is the…?
Atomic number.
An atom contains the same number of…?
Protons and electrons but with different charge.
The opposite of melting is…?
Freezing.
The opposite of boiling is…?
Condensation.
The opposite of sublimation is…?
Deposition.
What is sublimation and deposition?
Sublimation is changing state from solid to gas and deposition is gas to solid.
What is a controlled variable?
The one that stays the same.
What is a dependent variable?
The one you measure.
What is an independent variable?
The one that changes.
The current version of the periodic table was developed by who in what year?
Mendeleev in 1869
How many elements are there and how are they ordered?
118 and are ordered according to increasing atomic number.
What is ‘Brownian motion’ and how can it be observed?
When particles bounce of each other in solids and liquids.
Can be observed by spraying aerosols.
What is diffusion?
Movement of fluid from where it is highly concentrated to less concentrated.
How does temperature affect particle movement.
Higher temperatures cause particles to vibrate more meaning they move faster and can diffuse faster.
Why does a balloon stay inflated when you tie of pinch it?
when pressure is applied to the particles the air is kept inside.
Why do balloons whoosh around when untied?
Because high pressure builds up inside it and when released into a low pressure environment,.
What is density?
The density of a substance may be described as ‘how heavy it is for its size’.
