Chemistry E - Reactions of metals with acids and making salts Flashcards
Metal + Oxygen = ________
Metal Oxide
Metal + Water =_____ _________ + ________
Metal hydroxide + hydrogen
Metal + Acid = ____ + ________
Salt + Hydrogen
Displacement Reaction
When a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from an aqueous solution of one of its salts
Iron + Silver Nitrate —> Iron Nitrate + Silver
Oxidation and Reduction
Oxidation is loss of electrons
Reduction is gain of electrons
Redox reaction
A reaction where oxidation and reduction both appear.
iron oxide + carbon —> iron + carbon dioxide
Phytomining
Plants grown on land containing metal compound stored in tissues.
Plants harvested / burned.
Ash contains high concentration of metal compound.
Bleaching
Bacteria mixed with metal ore.
Chemical reactions lead to leachate.
Leachate contains metal compound.
Base
A base is a substance that neutralises an acid
6 Marker - Making salts by a metal carbonate
1 . Add sulphuric acid to a beaker
- Add copper carbonate to sulphuric acid to beaker and stir
- Keep adding CC until it no longer dissolves
- Use filter paper and funnel to remove excess CC by filtration
- Pour into evaporating basin and put over a Bunsen burner
- Leave to crystallise
