Chemistry Defintions Flashcards
Solvent
Liquid in which a substance/ solute dissolves
Solute
Substance which dissolves in a liquid/ solvent to form a solution
Saturated solution
Solution with the maximum concentration of solute dissolved in the solvent
Soluble
A substance that will dissolve
Insoluble
Substance that won’t dissolve
Solubility
A measurement of how much of a substance will dissolve in a given volume of liquid
Element
Substance made of atoms that all contain the same number of protons
Compound
Pure substance made up of two or more elements chemically combined together
Mixture
Combination of two or more substances not chemically joined together
Atom
Smallest particles of an element that consists of electrons surrounding a nucleus that contains protons and neutrons
Molecule
Group of two or more atoms chemically joined together
Atomic number
Number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Mass number
Sum of the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element that contain the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
Relative atomic mass
Weighted average mass of an atom of an element relative to 1/12th the mass of an atom of the carbon-12 isotope
Empirical formula
Simplest whole number ratio of the atoms of each element present in one molecule of a compound
Molecular formula
Actual number and type of atoms in a moleculem
