Chemistry Definitions Flashcards
Quantitative Chemistry
Study of how
much reacts or is produced.
Qualitative Chemistry
Study of what
reacts or is produced.
Mole
Quantity used to describe the amount of a substance.
Molar Mass
The mass of one mole of a
substance (element or compound)
Molecular compounds
Contain covalent bonds and are made up
of only non-metallic elements.
Ionic compounds
Contain ionic bonds containing both metallic
and non-metallic elements.
Homogeneous Mixture
Is the same throughout, in one phase or state, and if it is a liquid, it is usually clear. (clear does not
mean colourless)
Heterogeneous Mixture
Is not the same throughout and is usually characterised by the presence of visible chunks of matter, which are
different in colour, texture or phase from the rest of the material.
Ions
An ion is an atom that has gained or lost an electron to become a
charged particle.
ANION
Non metals will always gain electrons
to be a negative ion called an ANION.
CATION
Metals will always lose electron to be
a positive ion called a CATION.
Elements
Are made up of one type of atom. Elements are
placed in the periodic table according to their atomic
number. Simplest form of matter.
Physical Change
By changing the temperature, we can
change the state of the matter, this is known as a physical change. Can be easily reversed.
Chemical Change
New substances are formed when reactions take place. More difficult or impossible to reverse.
Compound
A pure substance that is
composed of different elements that have been chemically combined in fixed and definite proportions.
Molecules
Is the smallest particle of a
particular substance which can exist in a free state.
Mixture
Pure materials, both elements and compounds that are combined
physically, with the resulting mixtures
retaining the properties of the components from which they were made.
