Chemistry Core A - Products From Rocks: Compounds Flashcards
What is the definition of a compound?
A compound is two or more different types of elements that are chemically bonded to form a molecule.
What happens when two different elements react with each other?
When two different elements react with each other they chemically bond to form what is called a compound.
What are the two types of chemical bonding?
The two types of chemical bonding are ionic bonding and covalent bonding.
What happens in ionic bonding?
In ionic bonding metals loose electrons and become positively charged ions; non-metals gain the electrons that the metals loose and become negatively charged ions, the metals and non metals are then equally and oppositely charged and attract each other to form ionic bonds.
What happens in covalent bonding?
In covalent bonding non-metals without a full shell of electrons react with each other and share their outer shell of electrons, so they can each acquire a full outer shell of electrons.
Are the properties of compounds very similar or very different from their original elements?
The properties of compounds are totally different from the properties of their original elements.
Can compounds only be very simple or very complex, or both?
There are many different compounds; some of which are simple and some of which are complex.
What does the chemical formula of a compound show?
The chemical formula of a compound shows what type and how many atoms it contains.
