Chemistry - Chemical equilibrium & Le Chatelier's Principle Flashcards
When the rates of the forward and reverse reactions are equal leading to constant concentrations of reactants and products
Chemical equilibrium
Reactions where products can turn back into reactants
Reversible reactions
Expresses the ratio of the concentrations of products to reactants at equilibrium for a given reaction at a specific temperature
Equilibrium constant
K > 1
The products are favored
K < 1
The reactants are favored
K = 1
the system is balanced
states that if a system at equilibrium is disturbed by changes in concentration, temp, or pressure, the system will adjust to counteract the disturbance and reach a new equilibrium
Le Chatelier’s Principle
An increase in temp in an exothermic reaction
shift to the left
An increase in temp in an endothermic reaction
shift to the right
An increase in pressure in an equation with gases
Shift towards the side with fewer gas molecules
An increase in volume in an equation with gases
shifts towards the side with more gas molecules
