Chemistry - Chapter Three: The Periodic Table Flashcards
What are the properties of metals??
Good conductors of heat and electricity Malleable Ductile Have high boiling and melting points Form positive ions in compounds Form ionic compounds Are shiny when polished or freshly cut
What are the properties of non-metals?
Cant usually conduct electricity Poor conductors of heat Have low boiling and melting points Form negative ions in compounds Form ionic and Covalent Compounds Usually brittle when solid
What are the Noble Gases?
The mostly unreactive group 18 of the periodic table
What is Electron Configuration?
The arrangement of electrons within an atom
What are electron subshells?
Different types of orbitals found in shells of an atom [s, p, d, f]
What are electron shells?
energy levels where elctrons are likely to be found
What are periods?
Horizontal rows on the periodic table, the elements of which share the same number of occupied shells
What are groups?
Vertical columns on the periodic table, the elements of which share the same number of electrons in their outer shell
What is the Periodic Table
A table showing elements in order of atomic number
