Chemistry Chapter 1 Flashcards
Study of Matter
Chemistry
Something that takes up space and mass
Matter
Any substance that has definite composition
Chemicals
The smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element
Atoms
A neutral group of atoms that are held together by covalent bonds
Molecules
A pure substance made of only one kind of atom
Element
A substance that is made from the atoms of two or more elements that are chemically bonded
Compound
A blend of two or more kinds of matter that can usually be separated by physical means
Mixture
Mixtures that are uniform in composition, stays the same throughout. (A.K.A. Solutions.)
Homogeneous
Mixtures that are not uniform in composition
Heterogeneous
Every sample of this has exactly the same characteristic properties and exactly the same composition
Pure Substance
A characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance
Physical property
A change in a substance that does not involve a change in the identity of the substance
Physical Change
a high-temperature physical state of matter in which atoms lose their electrons
Plasma
relates to a substance’s ability to undergo changes that transform it into different substances
Chemical Property
A change in which one or more substances are converted into different substances
Chemical Change
Energy being absorbed
Endothermic
Energy being released
Exothermic
They are organized into groups based on similar chemical properties
Periodic Table
The vertical columns of the periodic table are called
Groups
The horizontal rows of elements in the periodic table are called
Periods
an element that is a good conductor of heat and electricity
Metal
Can be hammered or rolled into thin sheets
Malleable
can be drawn into a fine wire
Ductile
an element that is a poor conductor of heat and electricity
Nonmetal
an element that has some characteristics of metals and some characteristics of nonmetals.
Metalloid
