Chemistry Ch 1 Vocab Flashcards
Scientific Method
The observation, explanation, and testing of an explanation by additional experiments.
Scientific Law
Broad generalization, based on results of many experiments. Offers no explanation.
Hypothesis
A tentative explanation of the results of experiments.
Data
The information (often in the form of physical quantities) obtained in an experiment or other experience or from references.
Theory
A tested explanation of the results of many experiments. Cannot be proven absolutely correct.
Atom
A neutral particle having one nucleus; the smallest representative sample of an element.
Molecule
A neutral particle composed of two or more atoms combined in a definite ratio of whole numbers.
Matter
Anything that has mass and occupies space.
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter that there is in a given sample.
Weight
The force with which something is attracted to the earth by gravity.
Compound
A substance consisting of chemically combined atoms from two or more elements and present in a definite ratio.
Mixture
Any matter consisting of two or more substances physically combined in no particular proportion by mass.
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture that has only one phase and that has uniform properties throughout; a solution.
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture that has two or more phases with different properties.
Solution
A homogeneous mixture in which all particles are of the size of atoms, small molecules, or small ions.
