Chemistry Bond Vocab Flashcards
The arrangement of electrons in an atom.
Electron configuration
A structural formula in which electrons are represented by dots.
Lewis structure
The principle that states that the structure of each successive elements is obtained by adding one proton to the nucleus of the atom and one electron to the lowest-energy orbital that is available.
Aufbau principle
The principle that states that two particles of a certain class can not be in exactly the same energy state.
Pauli Exclusion
The rule that states that for an atom in the ground state, the number of unpaired electrons is the maximum possible and these unpaired electrons have the same spin.
The Hund’s rule
The attractive force that holds atoms or ions together
Chemical Bond
A force that attracts electrons from one atom to another, which transforms a neutral atom into an ion
Ionic Bond
A bond formed when atoms share one or more pairs of electrons
Covalent Bonding
A chemical compound whose simplest units are molecules
Molecules Compound
A combination of chemical symbols and numbers to represent a substance.
