Chemistry B (Bonding) Flashcards
Ionic bonding
Happens between
A metal and a non metal
How does ionic bonding form.
The metal transfers electrons to the non-metal forming ions
What is a Ion
A charged particle from an atom gaining or losing electons
Metals form…
(What kind of ion)
Positive
Non metals form…
(What kind of ion)
negative ions
Ionic bonding example NaCl
Sodium transfers one electron to chlorine forming Na+ and Cl- ions. The oppositely charged ions are attracted to each other with electrostatic force
What is a Giant ionic lattice
The giant structure formed when millions of ions come together
Ionic bonding melting point
High melting point as a lot of energy needed to break the ionic bond and the electrostatic force in the giant ionic lattice
Electrical conductivity (solid)?
(Ionic bonding)
As a solid it does not conduct electricity because the ions can’t move
Electrical conductivity (molten or in solution)?
(Ionic bonding)
Can conduct electricity as the ions are free to move and carry the electrical current through the material
Covalent bonding happened between
Two non-metals
How does covalent bonding form
Non metals share a pair of electrons
Covalent bonding
(Molecule)
Two or more atoms bonded togther
Melting point?
(Covalent bonding)
Low melting point as little energy is required to break the weak intermolecular force
Electrical conductivity?
(Covalent bonding)
Does not conduct electricity as no free electrons that can move and carry an electrical current
