6
Q

does metallic bonds conduct electricity and why?

A

yes because they have delocalised electrons that are free to carry a charge.

7
Q

does covalent bonding conduct electricity and why?

A

they don’t conduct conduct as there are no free electrons to carry a charge.

Q

explain the ionic bond between MgCl and the outcome

A

the magnesium is the metal and the chlorine if the non-metal. The magnesium looses an electron from its outer-shell so that chlorine can gain a full outer-shell. This means that magnesium will gain a positive charge and chlorine will gain a negative charge.

Q

why can ionic compounds conduct when molten but now when solid?

A

this is because the ions are now free to move within the solution and they are no longer stuck in a fixed state.
