Chemistry - Atomic structure and the periodic table - The periodic table Flashcards
What are the horizontal rows in the periodic table called?
Periods
What are the vertical columns in the periodic table called?
Groups
What are the main properties of metals?
-High melting point
-Hard (difficult to scratch)
-Malleable (can be beaten into shape)
-Ductile (can be pulled into wires)
What are the main properties of non-metals?
-Low melting and boiling points.
-When non-metals are in a solid state, they are usually brittle so you can’t beat them into shape.
What are metalloids?
Metalloids are elements in the periodic table that have a mixture of properties of metals and non-metals. These elements are found close to the zig-zag line that separates the metals from the non-metals.
How can you determine what group an element is from looking at its electronic structure?
The number of electrons on the outer shell is the number of what group it is in.
How can you determine what period an element is from looking at its electronic structure?
The number of shells is the same as the period number.
