Chemistry 8.3 Vocab Flashcards
Bonding orbital
Molecular orbital that can be occupied by two electrons of covalent bonds
Sigma bond
Two atomic orbitals combine to form molecular orbital that is symmetrical around axis connecting two atomic nuclei
Pi bond
When pi molecular orbital is filled with two electrons; bonding electrons are to be found in sausage-shaped regions above and below bond axis of bonded atoms
Tetrahedral angle
Hydrogens in methane are at four different corners of geometric solid-regular tetrahedron; H-C-H angles are at 109.5 degrees
VSEPR theory
Repulsion between electron pairs causes molecular shape to adjust so valence-electron pairs are as far apart as possible
Hybridization
Orbital hybridization provides info about molecular bonding and molecular shape; several atomic orbitals mix to form same total number of equivalent hybrid orbitals
Molecular orbitals
When two atoms combine, this model assumes that their atomic orbitals overlap; orbitals that apply to the entire molecule
