Chemistry Flashcards
What is radiation?
When heat travels via waves. Does not need particles.
What is convection?
Gases, liquids and particles that can move and carry heat. In convection, heat rises and pushes elements down.
What is conduction?
Where heat travels from one particle to another.
What are the three methods of heat transfer?
Convection, conduction and radiation.
What is the atomic number for magnesium if there are 12 electrons?
12
How do you know the number of electrons to put in all of the shells (in an atom model)?
It’s the same as the number of protons, (the atomic number).
What is atomic mass?
The number of protons and neutrons present.
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons. It is located above the symbol of an element, while the atomic mass is below the element symbol.
How many electrons can there be in the first, second and third shells of an atom?
2 in the first, 8 in the second, and 8 in the third.
What does the state of matter depend on?
How fast the particles move and how strongly they are attracted to each other.
What are solutes, solvents and solutions?
A solute is the substance getting dissolved, a solvent is the liquid the solute gets dissolved in, and the solution is the end product.
What is a compound?
2 or more elements chemically joined.
How many types of atoms are there in an element?
1
What is a mixture?
2 or more substances mixed together, but not chemically joined.
What is a molecule?
2 or more atoms chemically joined.
