Chemistry Flashcards
Matter
Anything that is made of atoms
Electrons
Negative charged atomic particle
Neutrons
Neutral charged atomic particle
Protons
Positive charged atomic particle
Where are electrons found?
They are found in electron shells orbiting the nucleus
Where are neutrons found?
They are found in the nucleus
Where are protons found?
They are found in the nucleus
What does AMU stand for?
It stands for atomic mass unit
Why do we need a neutron?
It separates protons, normally protons repel
How is the atomic number used?
The atomic number is the amount of protons in the nucleus
How many electrons are there in an atom?
The same amount of protons which are needed to cancel each other
What is an atom?
It is what everything is made of
What is an atom made of?
It is made up of a nucleus and mostly empty space, also neutrons and protons which are inside the nucleus and electrons which are in shells around the nucleus
What is an electron shell?
It is the outside part of the atom
Atomic mass
The mass of an atom expressed in atomic mass units
