Chemistry Flashcards
What are isotopes?
Atoms of the same element which have different number of neutrons
What are group 1 known as in the periodic table?
Alkali metals
What are group 2 known as in the periodic table?
Alkaline earth metals
What are group seven known as?
Halogens
What are group eight known as?
Noble gases
What is an ion?
An ion is a charged atom or group of atoms
What is an ionic bond?
An ionic bond is the force of attraction between oppositely charged ions
What is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is formed when electrons are shared between non-metal ions
What is a solute?
The substance being dissolved
What is the solvent?
The liquid the solute is dissolving in
What is a solution?
The solute and solvent
What is soluble?
If a substance dissolves in a solvent it is said to be soluble
What does insoluble mean?
A substance that can’t dissolve
What is crystallization?
The formation of crystals by cooling a saturated solution?
What is a dilute solution?
A small amount of solute in a large amount of solvent
What is a saturated solution?
A solution that contains as much dissolved solute as possible at that temperature
What is chromatography?
A method used to separate a mixture of substances which are in a solution.
What is a mixture?
Is made up of two or more substances mingled together but not chemically combined
What is distillation?
A method used to separate substances which have different biking points eg. Alcohol and water
What is filtering?
A method used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid
What are the 3 states of matter?
Liquid, gas, solid
What is an element?
A substance made up of only one type of atom
What is a molecule?
Composed of two or more atoms chemically combined
What is a compound?
Consists of two or more elements chemically combined
