Chemistry Flashcards
Chemistry
the science that deals with the composition and properties of substances and various elementary forms of matter
Matter
anything Mass and volume that has mass and takes up space
Extensive property
Mass and volume, but hardness
Intensive Property
is a bulk property, meaning that it is a physical property of a system that does not depend on the system size or the amount of material in the system
Mass
amount of matter in an object
Volume
a measure of the amount of space occupied by that object
Physical Property
color, smell, freezing point, boiling point, melting point, infrared spectrum
Physical Change
is a change in which no new substances are formed
Chemical Property
is any of a material’s properties that becomes evident during, or after, a chemical reaction
Chemical Change
a usually irreversible chemical reaction involving the rearrangement of the atoms of one or more substances and a change in their chemical properties or composition, resulting in the formation of at least one new substance
Phase (Phase of Matter)
The states in which matter can exist: as a solid, liquid, or gas
Solid
is one of the four common states of matter. The molecules in solids are closely bound together, they can only vibrate
Liquid
A phase of matter in which atoms or molecules can move freely while remaining in contact with one another
Gas
a substance (such as oxygen or hydrogen) that is like air and has no fixed shape
Freezing
to become hardened into ice or into a solid body
