Chemistry Flashcards
Atom
The smallest unit of an element. Consisits of a central nucleus by one or more electrons.
Nucleus
Central part of an atom. Made of protons and neutrons. Contains majority of the atom’ mass
Proton
Positively charged particle. Found within an atomic nucleus.
Neutron
Uncharged particle. Found within and atomic nucleus.
Electron
Negativly charged particle. Located in shells that surround and atom’s nucleus
Ions
An atom that has had electrons added or taken away which results in a positively charged or negatively charged element
Elements
A molecule made up of one type of atom
Elctron shells
Paths that electrons follow around an atom
Periodic Table
The table used to read the elements
Periods
Periods indicate how many shells an atom has
Groups
Groups indicate how many valence electrons an atom has
Periodic law
A law that states protons and electrons weigh 1 amu and electrons weigh nothing when calculating atomic mass
Symbols
A letter or series of latters that represent each element
Atomic numbers
The number used to order the elemnts. Also the number of protons in an element
Relative atomic mass
A rounded value of an exact atomic mass aka atomic mass number
