Chemistry Flashcards
Atom?
The smallest unit of element. An atom has a central nucleus which is surrounded by one or more electrons.
Nucleus
Central part of the atom. Located in the centre of an atom. Composed of protons and neutrons. Most of the atoms mass is contained inside the nucleus. The rest of the atom weighs almost nothing.
Proton
It is a particle that is positively charged. Found within an atomic nucleus.
Particle
Is a part the makes up an atom. Particles make up atoms
Neutron
Uncharged particle. It is not positive or negatively charged. It’s neutral. Found within an atomic nucleus
Electron
Negatively charged particle. Can be located in shells that surround an atoms nucleus.
Ion
Add or takeaway an electron therefore changing its’ charge. E.g positive or negative.
Ionisation
The energy change that occurs when an atom loses an electron to form a positive ion
