Chemistry Flashcards
Atom
The smallest unit of an element. Consists of a central nucleus surrounded by one or more electrons.
Nucleus
It is the central part of an atom. Composed of protons and neutrons. Contains most of the atoms mass.
Proton
Positively charged particle. Found within an atomic nucleus.
Neutron
An uncharged particle (it is neutral). Found within an atomic nucleus
Electron
Negatively charged particle. Located in shells that surround an atoms nucleus.
Periodic Table
A table of the chemical elements arranged in order of atomic number, usually in rows.
Periods
Rows of elements
Groups
Columns of elements
Periodic law
Stating that elements, when listed in order of their atomic numbers, fall into recurring groups, so that elements with similar properties occur at regular intervals
Symbols
A form of shorthand for writing names of the elements
Atomic number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Relative atomic mass
The ratio of the average mass of an element
Mass number
Total number of protons and neutrons in a nucleus
Weighted mean
Relative amounts of each type of atom
Alkali metals
React strongly to water To form basic solutions
