Chemistry Flashcards
1
Q
Atom
A
- The smallest unit of an element
* consists of a nucleus circles by 1+ electrons.
2
Q
Nucleus
A
- The middle part of an atom.
- composed of protons and neutrons.
- has most of an atom’s mass.
3
Q
Proton
A
- A positively charged particle.
* Is found in an atomic nucleus.
4
Q
Neutron
A
- Does not have a charge (uncharged)
* found in atomic nucleus.
5
Q
Electron
A
- Is negatively charged.
* Located in shells that surround an atom’s nucleus.
6
Q
Atoms
A
A very small particle that makes up everything. Atoms have the same properties as the objects they make up
7
Q
Atomic number
A
The number of protons in an atom. The atomic number determines which element an atom is.
8
Q
Chemical symbol
A
The standard way that scientists write the names of the elements, using either a capital letter or a capital followed by a lowercase letter. Carbon is C and copper is Cu.
