Chemistry Flashcards
What can limestone be used for?
A building material
What carbonates decompose by heating in a similar way?
Magnesium, copper, zinc, calcium and sodium
Calcium oxide reacts with water to produce heat?
Calcium hydroxide- alkali- used in neutralisation of acids
How is calcium carbonate produced?
A solution of carbon hydroxide in water reacts with carbon dioxide
Carbonated react with acids to produce what?
Carbon dioxide (salt and water)
How is cement, motar and concrete made?
Limestone is heated with clay
Cement is mixed with clay to form motar
Cement is mixed with sand and aggregate to make concrete
What are most metals found as?
Compounds that require chemical reactions to extract the metal
How can copper be extracted
Heating the ores in a furnace (smelting)
What does the rate at which an object transfers energy by heating depend on?
Surface area and volume
The material of the object
The nature of the objects surface with which the object is in contact with
What is limestone mainly composed of?
Calcium carbonate CaCO3
What are the two ways metals can be extracted?
Reduction with carbon- metals that are less reactive
Electolysis- metals that are more reactive than carbon
What is cracking?
It’s where you make the bigger molecules smaller, to make them more useful
Broken down by heating them as they pass over a catalyst
Elements in the same vertical column are sometimes called ‘families’ Why?
They have similar properties/characteristics just like people in a family
What are horizontal rows on the periodic table called?
Periods
What is the specific heat capacity of a substance?
The amount of energy needed to change 1kg of an object by 1 degree
