Chemistry Flashcards
What is an ion?
It is an atom that is either positively or negatively charged because there is an imbalance of either protons or electrons.
Proton:_________
Neutron:________
Electron:_______
Positively charged
Uncharged
Negatively charged
When there are more protons then electrons, the atoms becomes what?
Cation and is positively charged.
What is an atom called when the electrons exceed the amount of protons in an atom?
Anion and is negatively charged.
What is a chemical bond?
Forces that hold atoms of a molecule or compound together.
________ bond: forms when a hydrogen atom with a partial positive charge attracts the partial negative charge of neighbouring electronegative atoms.
________ bond: forms when two or more atoms share electrons rather than gaining or losing them.
________ bond: the force of attraction that holds together ions with opposite charges.
1) hydrogen bond
2) covalent bond
3) ionic bond
What chemical bond is found most commonly found in the human body?
Covalent bond
What is a catalyst and is it a ion/molecule/compound?
Speeds up the chemical reaction by lowering the activation energy needed for the reaction to occur. It’s a compound.
Difference between inorganic and organic compounds?
Inorganic: do not contain carbon and are simply structured.
Organic: contain carbon.
What is dissociation?
The separation of acids, bases and salts in ions in a solution.
What is an enzyme?
Proteins
What is DNA and RNA? And how many strands for each?
Nucleic acids
DNA: two strands
RNA:one strand
