Q

Why do metals conduct heat & electricity so well?

A

As well as the vibrating, positively charged atoms, there are free electrons that collide with atoms passing on kinetic energy an heat.

9
Q

Why are pure metals often weak and brittle?

A

Because of their regular shape, rows of atoms can easily slide over each other.

Q

What are the properties of diamond?

A

The hardest substance on earth. Made entirely of carbon, each carbon atom has 4 bonds, forming a lattice.

Q

Give the properties of a thermosoftening polymer

A

Individual tangled polymer chains that easily slide over each other when heat is applied. The intermolecular forces are very weak indeed.

Q

Give the properties of a thermosetting polymer

A

These are polymer chains with strong cross-links that are VERY hard to break. They don’t soften when heated, just char at unbelievably high temperatures.

16
Q

What is the relative formula mass (Mr) of an element?

A

All of the atomic masses of the atoms in the formula added together.

17
Q

What is a mole?

A

Mole = The (Mr) in grams.

18
Q

What technique can be used to separate artificial colours like pen ink?

A

Paper chromatography.

19
Q

What are the advantages of using machines to analyse unknown substances?

A

Sensitive
Fast
Accurate.

20
Q

Give the advantages of gas chromatography

A

It tells you exactly, in proportion, what elements are in a substance.
