CHEMISTRY Flashcards
A positively charged particle found in the nucleus of an atom

PROTON
A subatomic particle neutrally charged found in the nucleus of an atom

NEUTRON
A subtomic particle with a negative electric charge found in clouds that surround the nu

ELECTRON
The positively charged central core of an atom, consisting of protons and neutrons and containing nearly all its mass

NUCLEUS
An Ion is an atom or molecure in which the total number of electrons is not equal to the total number of protons, giving the atom a net postitive or negative electrical charge.

ION
Isotopes are two or more forms of a chmeical element , having the same number of protons in the necleus, or the same atomic number, but having different numbers of neutrons in the necleus, or different atomic weight.

ISOTOPE
Subatomic particles are smaller than atoms. They are protons, neutrons, and electrons. They are the three basic subatomic particles.

SUBATOMIC PARTICLE
A electron of an atom, located in the outermost shell (valence shell) of the atom. They can be transferred to or shared with another atom

VALENCE ELECTRON
The electron cloud is where electrons are located. It is used to describe where electrons are located when they go around the nucleus of an atom.

ELECTRON CLOUD
The orbital is the wave function of an electron in a atom or molecule. It tells you the electron’s location.

ORBITAL
The mass number is also known as the atomic mass number or nucleon number. It tells you the total number of protons and neutrons (nucleons, together) in a atomic nucleus.

MASS NUMBER
The number of protons found in the nucleus of am atom found in an element.

ATOMIC NUMBER
A atom is the smallest unit that defines the chemical element. Every object that can be touched and felt is made up of atoms.
