Chemistry 2 (Crash Course) Flashcards
How is the periodic table of elements organized?
Ordered by atomic number, electron configuration, and reoccurring chemical properties
What represents all the isotopes together to varying degrees?
Atomic mass number
Describe some features of the periodic table
-Used to derive properties of elements -May predict properties of undiscovered elements -Framework used for analyzing chemical behavior
Define nucleons
protons+neutrons, which are contained in the nucleus of an atom and make up 99.9% of an atom’s mass
What is the charge of an atom based on?
The number of protons
How do isotopes differ?
Isotopes contain the same number of protons but different number of neutrons. If you change the number of protons, you essentially have a completely different element
When looking at the periodic table, what equates to the number of protons in which an element contains?
The atomic number represents the number of protons
When looking at the periodic table, what equates to the number of protons in which an element contains?
You would have to subtract the # of protons from the atomic mass number to calculate the number of neutrons
Describe the number of mols found in Carbon
There are 12.01 grams of Carbon per mol
What is 1 mol equivalent to?
6.022 x 10^23
Describe the octet rule
Atoms exist in their most stable form when their valence shell is full; so atoms strive to have 8 electrons in valence shell (except for Hydrogen and Helium)
Which group of elements are most stable because their valence shell is full?
Noble gases (aka Inert gases)
What is a redox reaction?
It is a coupled reaction (reduction + oxidation).
What does the Roman numeral for transitional metals communicate?
The charge on the metal, and NOT the number of atoms
What is the charge on OH?
OH-
Define binary acids
Acids composed of Hydrogen + Nonmetal
What is the relationship between the radius of the nonmetal and acid acidity in binary acids?
larger radius = longer, weaker bond, resulting in a lower pH and more acidic acid
Define oxyacids
Acids composed of Hydrogen + Oxygen + at least one other atom, usually a nonmetal
What is the difference between a molecule and a compound?
A molecule is composed of two or more of the same atom. A compound is composed of two or more of the same atom or different atoms. All compounds are molecules, but not all molecules are compounds.
What is the charge on C2H3O2 (acetate)?
C2H3O2-
What is the charge on NO3 (nitrate)?
NO3-
What is the charge on PO4 (phosphate)?
PO43-
What is the charge on SO4 (sulfate)?
SO42-
What is the charge on CO3 (carbonate)?
CO32-
