Chemistry -2 Flashcards
Physical change
A characteristic of matter that you can observe or measure without changing the identity of the matter ( changing the states of matter )
Chemical change
A change in matter in which the substances that make up the matter change into other substances with different chemical and physical properties ( foaming, fizzing, temperature, color change, fire)
Endothermic
Chemical reactions that absorb thermal energy
Exothermic chemical reactions that release thermal energy
chemical reactions that release thermal energy
Catalyst
Substances that increases the reaction rate
Inhibitor
Substances that decrease the reaction rate
Increases reaction rate
Surface area, concentration/pressure, temperature
Synthesis
2 or more substances combine to form a new compound Ca+O2 –> CaO
Decomposition
One compound breaks down and forms 2 or more substances ALCL3 —> CaO
Combustion
A chemical reaction in which a substance combines with oxygen and releases energy CH+O2 —> CO+H2O
Single replacement
One element replaces another element in a compound MG+HCI –> MGCI2+H2
