Chemistry Flashcards
What increases solubility?
Solubility increases as the
temperature
increases.
What is filtration?
Filtration is to separate an
insoluble solid
from a liquid.
What is evaporation?
Evaporation is to separate a soluble
solid from a liquid.
What is the definition of soluble?
Soluble means it is a substance which can dissolve.
What is the definition of insoluble?
Insoluble means it does not dissolve.
What is the definition of solute?
Solute means a solid that dissolves in a liquid.
What is the definition of solvent?
Solvent means a liquid that can dissolve a solid.
What is the definition of solution?
Solution is the liquid formed when a solute is dissolved in a solvent.
What is a reversible change?
A reversible change is when something is heated that can be changed back on cooling.
What is an irreversible change?
An irreversible change is when something is heated that cannot be changed back on cooling.
What are the five labels on a Bunsen burner?
The five labels on a Bunsen burner are the barrel, the regulating collar, the air hole, the gas tubing, the base.
What are the four steps to use when you are setting up your Bunsen burner?
- Attach rubber tubing to the gas tap.
- Move the colour until the air hole is one third open.
- Light a wooden splint and hold above the chimney or use a gas lighter.
- Turn the gas on by moving the gas tap.
What happens when the air hole on a Bunsen burner is open?
The flame is roaring, 2-toned blue, hard to see.
What happens when the air hole on the Bunsen burner is closed?
The flame is quiet, yellow/orange, easy to see.
What is the flame colour of sodium?
Yellow. (persistent)
What is the flame colour of potassium?
Lilac.
What is the flame colour of strontium?
Red
What is the flame colour of calcium?
Brick red (orange red)
What is the flame colour of copper?
Blue-green
What is the flame colour of barium?
Apple green
What are three things needed for burning? (fire triangle)
Oxygen, heat, fuel.
