chemistry Flashcards
one type of atoms are called what?
elements
2 or more different types of atoms are:
chemically bonded (compounds)
metal + non metal
ionic compounds
non metal + non metal
molecules
what are subatomic particles?
particles that are smaller than an atom
what is the atomic number?
number of protons in an atom
what are valence electrons?
electrons in the last shell
what are groups?
elements that have the same valence electrons, therefore having very similar chemical properties.
what are periods?
same number of shells, but elements have different properties.
what’s an isotope?
atoms of the same element with different number of neutrons, hence different mass numbers
what are ions?
charged atoms
what are cations?
positively charged atoms- these are formed when electrons are lost.
what are anions?
negatively charged atoms -these are formed when electrons are gained.
metals lose (blank) to form cations
electrons
non-metals gain (blank) to form anions
electrons
