Q

How can you tell the number of valence electrons in an element?

A

Based on the number of the group that the element is in

Ex; Al is in third group, has 3 valence electrons

Q

What is an Ion?

A

An element that has a charge.

A normal element will have the same number of protons and electrons, but an Ion will be imbalanced

16
Q

What are Ionic compounds made up of?

A

A metal and a non-metal

17
Q

How do Ionic compounds bond with each other?

A

They transfers electrons between them, which bonds them together

18
Q

What are Molecular Compounds made up for?

A

a non-metal and a non-metal

19
Q

How do Molecular Compounds bond together?

A

They will bond and share electrons between them, instead of transferring them completely

20
Q

What words must you always add to the written formula names of Molecular Compounds?

A

You must add prefixes to show their charges, unless it’s the first word with a charge of one

21
Q

What ion do Acids have the most of?

A

They have lots of H+ ions, which they will release

22
Q

What ion do Bases have the most of?

A

They have many OH- ions, which they will release

23
Q

Where are Acids on the pH scale?

A

They are lower than 7

24
Q

Where are Bases on the pH scale?

A

They are higher than 7

25
Which number is completely neutral on the pH scale?
7 (pure water should be ranked here, unless it's feeling silly)
26
When would you put a Roman numeral in a written formula?
When the metal is transitional
27
What ending do you put on the last word of the formula?
"ide"
28
What would you add to a written molecular formula?
prefixes to show their charges Ex; (Di) phosphorous (Tri)oxide
29
Where do you put the charges in a chemical formula?
you balance them out or use the crossover method Ex; Al3+ Cl- = AlCl3
30
When would you use brackets in a formula?
When there's a polyatomic ion and you have to separate numbers
31
What are two rules when it comes to balancing equations?
- You can only add coefficients - No altering atoms, you can't subtract
32
The coolest and awesomest advice Mr, Turnbull gave about balancing equations?
Never start with OH-, or just any polyatomic ion. Leave those till last
33
What is the law of the conservation of mass?
- All reactants must equal their products (if there's 2 hydrogens reacting, then somewhere in the products u must see those 2 hydrogens) - All atoms must be accounted for, you can't just randomly lose one
34
How would you write out hydrogen gas and oxygen gas as single elements and numbers?
H2 and O2
35
What does pH mean?
"potential of hydrogen" The scale tests to see how much hydrogen is in a solution
