Q

What does the electron arrangement of the outer shell tell you about the atom? Give examples.

A

It tells you about the properties of the atom. For example, a bond between two atoms is formed when a pair of electrons is shared - Carbon has four electrons in it’s valence shell thus can form four bonds.

Q

Why do atoms want a full valence shell and how do they get it?

A

It is a more stable arrangement. For an atom to have a full valence shell they must loose or gain electrons. If an atom loses an electron it becomes positive and if it gains one it becomes negatively charged.
