Chemistry Flashcards
List different ways of identifying a chemical reaction has taken place
gas given off, reactant “disappears” colour change, heat produced, change in pH, precipitate formed
What is precipitate
A solid that is formed when two solutions are mixed
What is a variable
A quantity that is changes in an investigation
What is a remedy
A substance or action that can be used to put something right
How do you make an acid neutral
By continuously adding an alkali to it until it has a neutral pH
What is neutralisation
Changing an acid or an alkali into a solution at pH7
What is a chemical reaction
A reaction between two or more substances that forms a new substance or substances
What is a reactant
Substances that react together in a chemical reaction; the chemicals that you start with in a reaction
What is the difference between a metal and non-metal
Metals
Most are solid at room temperature
They are shiny
They don’t shatter
They conduct heat energy well
They conduct electricity
They are malleable
They are ductile
They are sonorous
Non-metals
Many are gases at room temperature
They are dull
They are brittle
They don’t conduct heat energy well
Most do not conduct electricity
What does malleable mean
Can be hammered into shape
What does brittle mean
Can break easily with a snap
What does ductile mean
Can be drawn out into wires
What does sonorous mean
Makes a ringing sound when hit
