Q
properties of ionic compounds
A
- high melting point
- always solid at room temperature (if not in solution)
- retains a crystal shape
- at least slightly soluble in water
- conductive in a solution (forms electrolyte)
22
Q
multivalent ions
A
have more than one charge (transition metals) remember to put Roman numerals
23
Q
Thompson
A
- Discovered that negatively charged atoms were embedded in a sphere of positive charges
- Cathode tube
- “Plum pudding” or “Raisin bun” model
24
Q
Rutherford
A
- emits alpha particles (positively charged)
- particles going straight through
- some particles reflecting/coming back
- the atom is empty spaced
- dense centre
- when an alpha particle comes in contact with the nucleolus it scatters
25
Dalton
1. All matter is made out of invisible particles called atoms
2. All atoms of given element are identical
3. Atoms of different elements have different properties
4. Atoms combined in a set ratio creates a compound
26
Bohr
- Electrons could only live in specific energy levels when the electrons move between levels they would give specific colors of life
- spectrum
- bhors diagram
27
Protons
In the nucleus, positive charge
28
Neutrons
nucleus, no charge
29
Electrons
orbitals, negative charge
30
Evidence a reaction has occurred
Energy change, Odor change, color change, formation gas, formation of solid in solution
31
Endothermic reaction
A reaction that absorbs energy
32
Exothermic
A reaction that releases energy
33
Molecular (colavent) Compound Properties
1. Lower melting points because of the weaker bonds between molecules
2. Can be solid, or gas at room temperature.
3. Don't form electrolytes, so they don't conduct any electricity in a solution.
4. Solubility is inconsistent - some are soluble, others are not soluble in water.
