chemistry Flashcards
what are the three states
Solid,liquid,gas
what do the particles in a solid do
they vibrate around a fixed point
what do the particles in a liquid do
The particles are NO longer fixed and they can slide over each other
what do the particles in a gas do
they are far apart and move fast and collide with ecah other
do solids have a fixed shape or volume
yes solids do have a fixed shape and a fixed volume
do liquids have a fixed shape and volume
Liquids can adapt to there contatiner and do have a fixed volume though
do gas have a fixed shape of volume
gas has neither a fixed shape of volume
how does a solid turn into a liquid
by melting
how does a liquid turn into a gas
by boiling
how does a gas turn into a solid
by sublimation
how does a liquid turn into a solid
by freezing
how does a gas turn into liquid
by condensing
what is sublimation
conversion of a substance from the solid to the gaseous state without its becoming liquid
What is diffusion
high consentraction to low consentraction
what is a element
if all atoms are the same then that substance is a element.
where can all known elements be found
on the periodic table
what is the periodic table split into
it is split into metals and non metals they are seperated by a staircase line.
Rule to remember about the perodic table.
the first letter is ALWAYS a capital letter IF there is a 2nd letter it is ALWAYS lower case.
describe an atom.
in the middle is the nucleus is then protected by a shell.
what are the two numbers on the elements.
the bottom number is called the atomic number and the top number is the mass number.
how do you calculate number of neutrons.
you subtract the mass-atomic numbers.
how do you calculate the number of protons.
easy it is just the atomic number it is also the same with electrons.
if a compound ends with ate what does that mean
it has sevrel elements one of those being oxygen
if a compound ends with ide what does that mean
they only contain 2 elements
what is a soulution
when a solid dissolves in a liquid
what is the solid that dissolves
solute
what is the liquid that does the dissolving called
solvent
what are the 3 types of rock
igneous,sedimentry,metamorphic
how do igneous rocks form
when a volcano erupts mgma comes out and when the magma cools it becomes a igneous rock
what happens if it cools quickly
it has small crystals.if it cools slower the longer
how do sedimentry rocks form
when other rocks crumble the particles are carried away by wind or water and they form a layer edventually these layers become rocks by pressure
