Chemistry Flashcards
Define atom
a very small particle that makes up all things
Define element
pure substance made up of only one type of atom
Define proton
A proton is a particle found in an atom and has a positve electric charge.
Define neutron
A neutron is a particle found in an atom and has no electric charge.
Define electron
Much smaller particle foudn in an atom and has a negative charge.
Define nucleus
A nucleus is the core of an atom and consists of protons and neutrons
Atomic number
is the number of protons in an atom
Compounds
substance made up of two or more different types of atoms that have been chemically bonded
Mixtures
a combination of substances in which each keeps its own properties (not chemically bonded)
Molecules
two or more atoms joined (bonded) together
physical change
change in which no new chemical substances are formed. A physical change may be a change in shape, size or state. Many physical changes are easy to reverse.
chemical change
change in which a new substance is created. During a chemical change, some chemical bonds break and others form.
reactant
chemical substances used up in a chemical reaction.
product
the new substance created in a chemical reaction
group
in the periodic table of elements, a single vertical column of elements whith a similar nature
