What is the name of Ca(OH)2?

A

Calcium hydroxide

19
Q

periods are _____

A

rows

20
Q

groups are _____

A

columns

21
Q

protons. charge? location? importance?

A

positivly charged
in the nucleus
useful to find the atomic number

22
Q

neutrons. charge? location? importance?

A

neutrally charged
in the nucleus
useful to find th atomic mass (proton + neutron)

23
Q

electons. charge? location? imporantance?

A

negativly charged
orbits around the nucleus
important when bonding atoms

24
Q

What do atoms do to have a full outer shell?

A

Atoms ionize

25
Q

What may be a consequence of having farms that use fertilizers near a river?

A

Fertilizers contain a lot of chemicals, so if ferilizers are washed off crops into a nearby river. It could cause an algae boom, which means it causes lots of algae to grow, which would use more oxygen, causing fish to die, disrupting the food chain.

26
Q

What is a cation? How do you get a cation?

A

Positivly charged ion. from losing electrons

27
Q

What is a anion? How do you get a anion?

A

Negativly charged ion. from gaining electrons

28
Q

What is an application of a polyatomic ion?

A

Silver nitrite is used as a preservative and colour enhancer in hot dogs

29
Q

What is the law of conservation of mass

A

mass (and energy) cannot be created nor desdroyed

the mass and number of atoms of reactants is always equal to the mass and number of atoms of products

30
Q

What are some applications of acid-base neutailization?

A

Chemical spills: when acids are spilled it is very dangerous and unsafe to clean the subtance as an acid, so you need ot netrauilize first before cleaning the subtance.

Antacids: used to neutailize the acid in the stomach, which helps relieve indigestion

31
Q

What three things must be available for combustion to occur?

A

Heat oxygen
Fuel (Hydrocarbon)

32
Q

What are the two types of combustion?

A

complete combustion (when there is sufficient oxygen)

incomplete combustion (when there is insufficient oxygen)

33
Q

Name 3 indicators and explain how they work.

A

Litmas paper: Litmas paper has red and blue papers, used to indicate if a subtance is an acid or base. If the paper stays/turns red the subtance is acidic

Phenolpthalein: indicats whether a subtance is acidic or basic by dropping it into the subtance. If the substane is pink it is basic if it is clear then it is acidic.

Bromothymol blue: indicates if a subtance is basic or acidic by dropping the indicator into the subtance, if it turns blue it is basic and if it turns yellow it is acidic. If the substance is a dark green then the subtance is neutal.
