chemistry Flashcards
Name the three fuel types
gas, oil, coal
What does fuel that uses carbon use make?
Water+Carbon dioxide
What is thermal decomposition
It is where heat is used to break down compounds.
E.g zinc carbonate+Zinc oxide= Carbon dioxide.
How to test for Co2
Bubble the gas through lime water and see if it goes cloudy
what is exothermic
A compound that gives out heat.
What is endothermic
A compound that takes in heat/
Name an example of an endothermic reaction
melting, decomposition, boiling
Name an example of an exothermic reaction
combustion,freezing, condensing
Dis an upward energy diagram endothermic
YESSSS
Is bond-breaking endothermic
YeS
If the energy is used to break bonds id less than the product is endothermic
yes
What does balanced symbol equation mean.
In a balanced symbol equation, chemical formulae represent the reactants and products. The equation shows how many atoms are rearranged and joined together differently, and gives the relative amounts of reactants and products.
catalyst meaning
Substances that speed up chemical reactions but are unchanged-not electric- at the end.
combustion meaning
A chemical reaction in which a substance reacts quickly with oxygen and gives out light and heat. Also called burning.
conservation of mass
In a chemical reaction, the total mass of reactants is equal to the total mass of products. This is conservation of mass. Mass is conserved in chemical reactions and in physical changes.
decomposition
A chemical reaction in which a compound breaks down to form more than one product.
conserved
When the quantity of something does not change after a process takes place.
physical change
One that changes the physical properties of a substance, but no new substance is formed. A physical change is reversible.
energy level diagram
Diagram showing the relative energies of the reactants and products. It shows whether a reaction is endothermic or exothermic.
