Chemistry Flashcards
What is the first group on the periodic table called?
Alkali metals
What is the 2nd group on the periodic table called?
Alkaline earth metals.
What is the 17th group on the periodic table called?
Halogens.
What is the 18th group on the periodic table called?
Nobel gases.
State 3 indicators of physical change.
- change of size/ shape
- change of state
- dissolving
State 5 indicators of chemical change.
- precipitate
- bubbles/gas is formed
- heat/light is produced
- change of colour
- change is generally hard to reverse
What are the differences between a covalent bond and an ionic bond.
Covalent bond has 2 non-metals, ionic bond has metal and non-metal. Covalent bond is sharing of electrons, ionic bond is a transfer of electrons.
What is the general formula of a synthesis rxn?
A+B -> AB
What is the general formula for a decomposition rxn?
AB -> A + B
What is the general formula for a combustion rxn?
A + O2 -> AO / CxHy + O2 -> CO2 + H2O (hydrocarbon)
What is the general formula for a single displacement reaction?
A + BC -> B + AC
What is the general formula for a double displacement reaction?
AB + CD -> AD + CB
List some properties of acids.
- tastes sour
- not slippery
- pH lower than 7
- releases (H+) ions in aqueous solutions
- corrodes metals
List some properties of bases.
- tastes bitter
- slippery
- pH greater than 7
- releases (OH-) ions in aqueous solutions
- doesn’t corrode metals
When does a neutralization reaction occur?
When an acid and a base react to form products that have a pH closer to 7 than the reactants (the products are usually water and a salt)
