Chemistry #1 Flashcards
What is an atom?
The smallest particle of an element. The building blocks of all matter.
What is an atomic nucleus?
The central part of an atom. This part contains most of the mass of the entire atom
What is a proton?
A positively charged particle found within an atomic nucleus
What is a neutron?
An uncharged particle found within the nucleus
What is an electron?
A negatively charged particle located in shells that surrounds the atomic nucleus
What is a quark?
A tiny particle which makes up larger particles such as protons and neutrons
What are Alkali Metals?
Alkali metals are the elements in group 1 and react aggressively to any element
What are Cations?
Cations are atoms with a positive charge when electrons are removed from the actual atom to make the atom more stable.
What are Anions?
Anions are atoms with a negative charge when electrons are added to the actual atom to make the atom more stable.
What are Noble Gases?
Noble gases are gases that are unreactive they include: Helium, Neon, Argon, Krypton, Xenon, and Radon.
What are valence shells?
The outermost shell of an atom.
What are valence electrons?
The electrons in the outermost shell.
What is an Octet?
A group of 8 electrons in a shell.
What are Ions?
An atom or molecule with an electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.
What is Matter?
Matter is any substance that has mass and takes up space by having volume. Most common ones are: Solids, liquids, gases and plasma.
