Q

What happens when you blow into the calcium hydroxide with a straw?

A

It goes cloudy. The solution becomes limewater or calcium hydroxide solution. The cloudiness is calcium carbonate, so you have gone right back to where you have started.

Q

How does solution mining work?

A

A hole is bored into the underground salt deposit and two pipes are lowered into it. Water is pumped down one pipe and allowed to dissolve the salt. brine ( a solution of salt) is pumped up to the surface through the second pipe.

21
Q

How does underground mining world?

A

The salt is physically dug out of the ground in an operation involving drilling, cutting and blasting the rock. After the salt is removed and crushed, a conveyor belt hauls it to the surface. Most salt produced this way is used as rock salt for road ‘gritting’ or ‘salting’ during the winter.

22
Q

What are the four steps to obtaining rock salt?

A
  1. Addition of water- the salt will dissolve in the water but the sand will not.
  2. Stirring- speeds up dissolving of the salt.
  3. Filtration- to remove the insoluble sand.
  4. Evaporation- to remove water from the salt solution. To leave salt crystals.
23
Q

Define desalination.

A

The process of making pure water with salt water by removing the salt from the water.

24
Q

How does Distillation work?

A

The solution is heated and the solvent evaporates. The vapour then passes into a Liebig condenser, where it condenses (turns back into liquid). The solute does not evaporate, so it remains in the flask.

25
Define distillation.
Distillation is evaporation followed by condensation.
26
Describe the method for obtaining pure water from copper sulphate solution.
1. Measure 100cm cubed of copper sulphate solution and place in conical flask. 2. Add 2-3 anti-bump granules to the solution. 3. Place the flask on the gauze, lightly clamp it and put the bung securely in the flask. 4. Half fill beaker with tap water, place test tube in water and insert delivery tube into the test tube. 5. Heat flask. Control the rate of heating so that drops of water are obtained slowly in the test tube. Stop heating when about 1/3 test tube full. IMMEDIATELY REMOVE THE DELIVERY TUBE TO AVOID SUCKING BACK WATER.
27
What does a solar still do and how does it work?
A solar still collects water that's evaporated, then stores it in a container.
28
What does the term "salt" mean in chemistry?
It is the term used to describe a group of compounds formed from acids. It does NOT just refer to common salt which you use on food.
29
What is a salt made from Hydrochloric acid called?
A chloride.
30
What is a salt made from sulfuric acid called?
A sulfate.
31
What is a salt made from nitric acid called?
A nitrate.
32
What are the three different types of salt?
Chlorides, sulfates and nitrates.
33
In chemistry, what is a base?
A base is a substance that reacts with an acid to produce a salt and water only.
34
When referring to " bases and Alkalis", what are Alkalis?
Alkalis are bases that can dissolve in water, e.g. Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. I.e a soluble base.
35
What is neutralisation?
When an acid is added to an alkali (e.g. Sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide) a neutralisation reaction occurs, i.e they cancel each other out. This works vice-versa too. If the correct amounts are mixed, a neutral solution can be formed.
36
What is the general word equation for the reaction between an acid and an alkali?
Acid+alkali➡salt+ water
37
What happens when Hydrochloric acid is reacted with sodium hydroxide?
Sodium chloride and water is produced. The sodium chloride which is formed is dissolved in the water and cannot be seen. When the water is evaporated off crystals of the salt are left in the evaporating basin.
38
Name 5 equations were salt is produced.
Hydrochloric acid+sodium hydroxide-sodium chloride+water. Sulphuric acid+potassium hydroxide-Potassium Sulfate+water. Nitric acid+calcium hydroxide-calcium Nitrate+water Hydrochloric acid+lithium hydroxide-lithium chloride+water Sodium hydroxide+nitric acid- sodium nitrate+water
39
What pH do acids fall in to and what colour do they turn the universal indicator?
Acids have a pH that is less than 7 and turn Universal Indicator red or orange.
40
What pH do alkalis fall in to and what colour do they turn the universal indicator?
Alkalis have a pH that is more than 7 and turn Universal Indicator blue or purple.
41
How does rubbing a Dalk leaf help to reduce the irritation of a nettle sting?
The Dalk leaf contains an alkaline which neutralises the acid in the nettle sting.
